dictionary

Welcome to the dictionary. Here are listed any terminology which may not be obvious or divisible by context. While most of the terminology here is standard/"official", so to speak, some of it is of my own definition; and I've added a lot to "standard" terminology for the sake of storytelling and universe order. I'm honestly too lazy to segregate the two, so if you're really curious about a certain term, simply contact me and I'll be happy to give you some more information about it. ♪♫

Magic

magic: an umbrella term used to define any act of casting spells and manipulating energy/elements in order to create a desired outcome, either benevolent or malevolent in nature. It can be something as simple as changing a mood or improving sleep or as complicated as glamour or golem magic. The most common forms of magic are: white, black, glamour (fairy magic), golem, rune, earth (elemental) and crystal.

fairy magic: an umbrella term used to define such things as glamour, wind walking, crystal magic (using the energy of charged crystals) and earth magic (using the energy of the elements).

glamour: a type of spell which changes one's perception of oneself or of the surrounding world. One can be glamoured to resemble another person or an animal. Foods can be glamoured to look/taste different (bitter mushrooms, for instance, are often glamoured as cakes and fed to mortals as a prank).

white magic: a wide term used to define magic with the aim to benefit someone other than the spellcaster. In other words, a money/fortune spell cast upon another person would be considered white magic.

crystal magic: the use of crystals such as quartz or amethyst for their respective energies (healing, wellness, happiness, protection, etc.)

earth magic: also referred to as elemental magic, earth magic sees the manipulation of elemental energy (wind, water, fire, etc. as well as seasonal changes and moon phases) to bring about changes in nature. This can include changing one's mood (as living beings are a part of nature) or the colour of a tree. The forces are strong and can cause harm, but are not baneful.

black magic: a wide term used to define all spirit- and otherworld-oriented magic. This can include such invasive things as possession of another living body (not to be confused with golem magic), or necromancy, and willing the spirits of the deceased into the bodies of the living (second-hand possession). While not all black magic is baneful, a large portion of black magic spells see the all the benefit onto one person and total loss onto another (such is the case with possession).

necromancy: the act of bringing dead souls who have passed on back to the realm of the living. This is often painful to the spirit in question; as a result they are filled with spite and loathing, driven with a need for revenge.

Terminology

grimoire: a large book kept by a witch to hold spells, notes, journal entries, etc.; they are hand made, usually of leather and heavy paper, and charmed with powerful magic.

token: a token is a gift given to someone close. Tokens are usually hand-made wearables such as jewelry or clothing but can also be something like a rock, crystal or piece of bark which has been carved. The token is charmed, giving it magical properties, and cannot be taken back. A kind of bond forms when tokens are exchanged, one which can never be broken.

mana: a universal term which defines one's capacity for magic. The higher one's mana, the more spells one can cast in more rapid succession. Mana typically grows with practice, and can be boosted by certain crystals.

spirit: a certain kind of energy which relates to spiritual and otherworldly spellcasting, and is often limited to white magic. Priests/priestesses and monks/nuns possess spirit, which they use for protection and divination as well as communication with the gods.
